Adaptations

Sructural adaptations

The Fossas main evolutionary traits are concentrated on balance, grip and coordination. It's body is light and lean with hind legs longer than its front legs enabling them to leap easily from tree to tree when hunting. The Fossa also has flexible ankles that allow it to grasp the tree trunks so that it can run up and down the tree head first. They also have traction on the sole of their feet to improve grip and prevent a fatal fall.

Physiological adaptations

A physiological behavior that is unusual is that the Fossas are active not only during the day but also at night. Fossas have a large anal gland that helps them to mark their territory. They are very versatile and are able to adapt to different habitats depending on where they are.
